Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26: Initiatives to Boost Employment Opportunities
State focuses on job creation through subsidies and welfare schemes.
Tamil Nadu’s Finance Minister, Thangam Thennarasu, presented the state’s budget for 2025-26 on March 14, 2025, unveiling several initiatives aimed at boosting employment. A notable measure is the subsidy of ₹20,000 for select gig workers to purchase electric scooters, targeting 2,000 registered individuals in the food and grocery delivery sectors. This initiative aims to support the growing number of youth engaged in these services amid rising unemployment post-COVID-19.

In addition to the e-scooter subsidy, the state plans to construct one lakh new houses under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam housing scheme. This large-scale infrastructure project is expected to generate employment opportunities in the construction sector, thereby stimulating the local economy.
The budget also emphasizes welfare schemes, such as the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam, which provides monthly financial assistance to women. While primarily aimed at women’s welfare, this scheme indirectly contributes to economic activity by increasing disposable income and stimulating local markets.
Furthermore, the state government has reiterated its commitment to the two-language policy, despite the Union government’s withholding of ₹2,152 crore in funds due to Tamil Nadu’s refusal to implement the three-language policy. This stance underscores the state’s dedication to preserving its linguistic heritage while ensuring uninterrupted funding for education.
These initiatives reflect Tamil Nadu’s strategic approach to enhancing employment opportunities and supporting various sectors through targeted subsidies and welfare programs.
